Shark Dissection and Tagging Workshop – UniSC Animal Ecology Lab (FULL)
9am - 2pm
Interested in core biology or need to learn how to perform minor surgery to implant acoustic tags? Come and learn how about both at the UniSC Animal Ecology Lab at this interactive shark workshop! Using donated cadaver sharks, you will learn about shark anatomy, collect data and samples for future research programs, and how to take specimen photos for cataloging. We will also be ‘deploying’ some acoustic tags so that you can safely learn the surgical procedures required to cut, place and suture shark skin – critical training before working on live animals in the field!
Spaces are very limited (12), so register early to avoid disappointment (FULL - registrations closed)

Sharks and technology - using drones and BRUVs for elasmobranch research (FULL)
9am - 12pm
Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (BRUVS) are increasingly being used for shark and ray research including abundance estimates, behaviours, long-term monitoring, and more. Though they are a relatively simple set-up, BRUVS can be tailored to answer specific questions. In this workshop, we will go through BRUVS from start to finish. Starting with how to design frames for different purposes, standards for setting BRUVS, annotation, and types of analyses. We will have some time for each of you to practice different annotation programs, so please bring a computer and, if possible, a USB stick or hard drive - we will have some available but these may be limited.

Acoustic Telemetry Data Analysis Workshop – UniSC (FULL)
9am - 12pm
In this 3 h computer-based workshop, attendees will learn how to analyse passive acoustic telemetry data collected from sharks and rays using popular software for exploring, analysing and visualising these data.
Attendees will discuss and explore various steps researchers need to take when working with these often very large and complex datasets, from managing acoustic tracking data in the IMOS Animal Tracking Facility’s data portal, to exporting, merging, consolidating and mapping acoustic telemetry datasets in RStudio.
