2021 Conference grants and awards

The OCS will be providing funding for students to travel to the WFC2021 held in Adelaide, South Australia on 20-24th September 2021.

2019 Conference grants and awards

The OCS is provided funding for students to travel to the OCS/NZMSS conference to be held in Dunedin, New Zealand from 3-5 July 2019. There were five $500 AUD grants available to students for this conference. Note that students are expected to present a talk or poster at the meeting, and successful applicants must acknowledge the OCS as providing funding to support their travel.

Instructions for applying for the OCS 2019 travel awards are as follows:

  • Complete all fields in this form to the best of your ability and return via e-mail to the OCS secretary at: Samantha.sherman@my.jcu.edu.au

  • Applications will be assessed on the basis of the scientific merit of the research being presented, evidence of efforts to disseminate information about the project, and the need for support based on budget information provided.

  • Applications must be received by 05:00 PM AEST 19 April 2019.

  • Please note that these awards will be highly competitive and poor quality applications will not be considered.

2018 Conference grants and awards

From 21-23 Feb 2018, the OCS is holding a special event conference at Moreton Bay Research Station. The Save Our Seas Foundation is generously supporting OCS students by providing five travel grants of AUD$500 each to help students attend the meeting to present their work. In addition, the OCS is also offering 2 grants of AUD$200 each to help students attend the pre-conference workshop on telemetry.

Our long-term sponsor Passions of Paradise is also once again supporting prizes of $500 to be awarded to the students that deliver best oral presentation and the best conference poster. 

2017 Conference grants and awards

In 2017, the OCS is not holding a conference and is instead encouraging members to attend the 10th Indo-Pacific Fish Conference, the region's largest ichthyology conference held once every four years. The 10th Indo-Pacific Fish Conference will be held in Tahiti from 2-6 October 2017.

 

The OCS is offering two Special Travel Awards for this event to support airfare travel to Tahiti up to a maximum of $2,000 AUD.

  1. One grant is to support a female student (honours, masters, or PhD) or Early Career Researcher (within five years of graduating from a postgraduate degree) to attend IPFC Session I1 Women in Marine Sciences in the Indo-Pacific. Women from the Large Ocean Island States in the Pacific and Indian Oceans are especially encouraged to apply

  2. One grant is to support a postgraduate student (honours, masters, or PhD) to attend IPFC Session D2 Indo-Pacific Predators: biology, ecology, conservation and management.

2016 Conference grants and awards

In 2016, the OCS awarded six Travel Grants funded by the Save Our Seas Foundation and Great Barrier Reef tourism operator Passions of Paradise.
